Specialists in Timber Frame Construction

At Norfolk Timber Frames, we specialise in creating bespoke timber frame buildings that enhance homes and properties across Norfolk and East Anglia. Our portfolio includes a wide variety of projects, from garden outbuildings, home offices and garages to porches, pergolas, gazebos, and carports. We also undertake bespoke and specialist timber structures, including for film and TV productions.

What sets us apart is our ability to adapt to each client’s needs. Whether it’s a small garden building or a large timber framed house, every project is designed and built with the same level of care, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. We combine traditional joinery techniques with modern construction methods, ensuring every frame is not only strong and durable but also a beautiful feature of the property.

Over the years we’ve delivered projects for homeowners, developers, and self-builders, and have worked on everything from extensions and new builds to listed buildings and commercial spaces. No matter the scope, our goal remains the same – to create high-quality timber frame structures that stand the test of time and reflect the character of each property.

Our Approach to Timber Framing

Stick Build

Stick build uses treated softwood to create a strong superstructure, fixed together with nails, bolts and glue. Once assembled, the frame is usually finished inside with plasterboard and externally with render, cladding, or a brick skin.

This method is the quickest and most cost-effective way of building, making it a popular choice for homeowners, developers and self-builders. While the timber is hidden once complete, stick build construction still provides excellent thermal efficiency, giving homes a warmer feel than traditional brick and block builds.

Post & Beam

Post & beam construction uses oak or Douglas fir, traditionally jointed and pegged together to create a structure where the timber is left exposed as a stunning feature. This method is often seen as the “Rolls Royce” of timber framing, delivering exceptional strength and beauty.

Although more labour-intensive and therefore higher in cost, post & beam construction produces buildings with real character that will stand the test of time

A Combined Method

For many projects we blend both methods, using a stick build structure with post & beam elements. This approach helps to balance budget with design, keeping costs manageable while still showcasing exposed oak or Douglas fir as a focal point.
